Currently I am travelling a lot via night train to a client. It is quite comfortable: You enter the train, sleep in your bunk and in the morning you are at you destination.
Well almost always.
Today I had a night train back home. At 5:40 it should arrive in Wroclaw. I was aware it will take some more time since currently - obviously close after Poland's summer vacation period - there are heavy construction work with Polands rail tracks. (Good idea! 480km in 9hours indicate some improvements are possible...)
However, at 6 in the morning I stood up (normally the conductor should have awaken me half an hour ago) and asked my cell phone about it's current position and see remaining track home. Maybe another half an hour, I thought. But: This gadget told me I am on half way between start and destination. Yes, right. Can't be. Ha, that would mean, the train needs another 5 hours home. Bloody gadget.
Waiting for the next strain station, finally approaching. And I do not trust my eyes: The bloody cell phone is right about it's position. We are about still 5 hours (normal Polish train time) away from home. I thought, I could almost see the departing train station...
Am I woke up in a parallel universe?
I go to the conductor asking innocent about the remaining time. He is looking at me and answers quietly: A lot.
I just turned around and went back to my bunk finding some more sleep...

Folgender Dialog entsteht so ähnlich dann jedes Mal:
- Dame: Guten Abend? [Oder manchmal etwas kurz angebunden: Ja? - na ist teilweise eben schon spät!]
- ich: Guten Abend. Ich möchte ein Taxi am Flughafen.
- Dame: OK. Szhjghsz schrzt ssakjhdf ... sdg?
- Pani: Dzien dobry, sucham? [Czasami - nie tak mily - tylko: Tak?. Noo czasem jest juz pozno...]
- Ja: Dzien dobry. Jestem na lotnisko i chialbym taksowka.
- Pani: Dobrze. Fszczldhjlf szczerwa ... drzszgrgsze?
[I to zawsze dziala!]
- Pani: Dobrze. Ale jak pan nazywa?
- Ja: No jestem pan Andrzej.
- Pani: Pan Andrzej, tak?
- Ja: Tak.
- Pani: Dobrze, dziekuje i dobranoc.
Zawsze chialbym tesz powiedziec "Dobranoc" ale linia juz zamkniety.
Dlaczego Pan Andrzej? Bo sprobowalem juz "Pan Andreas". To szok dla mily pani! Zawsze.
Taksowkarz patrze do mnie srogo "Pan Andrzej?" - ja "Tak" - i potem juz jest milo i usmiecha sie.
I potem tylko jeszcze 15minut do domu...

Lunch in my office cafeteria
The office I work in is situated in a big office complex with all its advantages: Porter service, big conference rooms, cleaning service, its own post office, a small shop, and last but not least a nice cafeteria offering almost all day warm and cold food.
Of course the ladies there just speak Polish as the menues are written in Polish only. Hence a quite interesting challeng for me to choose and pronounce what I would like to have - in Polish of course. Sometimes the result thrilled me, sometimes I was sad looking at my plate - even before start eating.
Last Monday - after pronouncing my Polish tongue twisters and awaiting the eatible result - the first time the lady behind the bar smiled at me said (or asked?): You can speak a little bit Polish, can't you?
I was - a little bit - astonished.
I wanted to say: Well, I am customer of this facility since four months, at least twice a week if not everyday, asking you in Polish what is what, pointing at soups asking names and counting my coins afterwads. Well, yes, maybe we could say so.
I said: Yes, a bit.
I smiled back - at least I hope so -, took my lunch and digged in.

Super.
Gab mir also das Formular (YES!
Also ca. 2% aller möglichen Felder?
Stimmt. So was wird meistens benötigt. (Super vorbereitet, Herr Pohling!). "Da ist ein Kopierer." Ach, der braucht Kleingeld! - Wer erinnert sich an Parken und Parkautomat? (SUPER VORBEREITET, HERR POHLING!)
Haa!
*wimmer* So was schluckt der blöde Kopierer doch nie! Also zurück zum Amt. Sämtliche Groschen in das Gerät. Klimper, klimper, 1min. lang! Aber der Kopierer funktioniert dann. Erledigt.
10min. lang.
Also "Auf Wiedersehen".

Polish Living Expenses
More than twice I was told the idea of building cheeeeap call centers or even cheeeeaper near-shore software development centers. Yes. Brilliant ideas. For clarification the following statement.
POLAND IS NOT CHEAP ANYMORE!
And - please! - do not start arguing or try me to convince from the oppsite. Well, yes, you are right, in the eastern part of Poland and specially in the country the living costs are different for sure. But, on the other hand, no high-educated University grad wants to live there. Uuuh. Suprise, suprise. :)
So what are the chances of setting up a sucessfull call center with fluent German and/or English speaking, high educated master's degrees with special business know-how near the Ukrainian border? Take a guess!
Beside, I am happy in Wroclaw and don't want to move again (reasons to be found in this blog!) if possible.
And apropos Wroclaw: Living costs of Polish boom towns are almost comparable with German metropolitan areas. Warsaw definitely beyond the average, Wroclaw increaslingly likely.
And beer prices are already at German level, unfortunately...

Flying visit to Frankfurt
Last week the first time after five weeks leaving Frankfurt with a big rental truck I went back for a one day visit.
First everything was as usual: Wroclaw airport didn't change. Oh, no wait - there is now a third gate, squeezed between first and second gate. Hence less room in the small departue hall than before. Time for the new terminal! Will be ready for the next football EM 2012. Hopefully earlier!
Frankfurt airport. Approaching from east, along the autobahn A3, Offenbacher Kreuz, crossing almost touching the ground autobahn A5. The southern part of the airport, the former U.S. air base, disappeared at all. Leveled completely. Nothing. Just rubbish. Next Terminal 3 is already in usage? Gee, the workers there are damn fast! Well, almost the same speed as Poland is building right now the autobahn from Görlitz to Wroclaw. ;)
The meetings and dates this day did not let much spare time for talks to colleagues and friends. Unfortunately. Almost all day in hurry for the next appointment. But luckily a quick "bar meeting" at the end of the day, after beeing checked in by good Lufthansa friends - avoiding economy ckeck in waiting lines.
It was a good day in Frankfurt, business-wise and meeting good friends. I would like to visit the town again. Soon. But, honestly, the best thing was coming home finding my darling waiting for me...
